The Real UK Opens Itself On Weekends
: From A Canvas To A Bedroom, Open Studios In The UK

The writer’s note

“Who are the neighbours in my area?”
“Who is living in the house that I always pass by?”

Out of curiosity and interest I made up my mind to go on a journey to meet artists in their open studios in the UK. This book focuses on ‘open studios’ which I experienced in the UK over a period of about two years. It is a record of my communication with artists whom I met in London, Brighton, Cambridge, Bristol and Kendal in England, and Ards in Northern Ireland. Visiting open studios was a golden opportunity to discover various artists and to see their works in their studios at first hand and to engage with them in discussion. This includes young artists who have just started their career, late-beginners pursuing their dream to become artists, mature artists who have continued to work hard without just feeding off their previous success and reputation, female artists who juggle work with their life as housewives, amateurs who trace their passion in art and special artists who reaffirm their will to live through art.

Encountering artists in their open studios is a process of endless questioning and getting answers to why they have a certain attitude towards art and ways of achieving sustainable cultural practices. Therefore, this book conveys the process of growth in people in the arts field who have their own belief and enthusiasm for their art, rather than the myths or success stories of celebrated artists. I hope my book makes a contribution to enlarging the perspective of the concept of creativity and the value of the arts, artists and their studios. I also hope my work brings a fresh approach to the visual art scene, particularly in South Korea, and leads to revealing the creative qualities of cities and regions.

It is tea time, so time to have a chat with the artist who is making his own world in his studio!

Commentary

“This is a charming and clear-sighted survey of the practice of open studios in the United Kingdom. Ho Kyung Moon is a highly attentive observer of this emerging custom and draws a picture of it unlike any other writer. This book brings together a discussion of the amateur and the ‘love of art’ to propose a culture in which social and urban development happen, in part, through collective action based on enthusiasm. This book is at once a portrait of artists, of neighbourhoods, and a perceptive argument for creativity.”
- Dr. Matthew Fuller, Reader, Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London

“Art, in particular contemporary art, is often viewed as complicated or inaccessible. The perception of artists is not very different; they can be seen as mysterious, unapproachable and remote. The Real UK Opens Itself On Weekends, with the help of beautiful photography, shows artists and their studios in a friendlier way, as neighbours who we can get to know. This book is a lovely invitation to engage with art and artists for those who may not know much about art but are full of curiosity. It is also an invitation and encouragement to Korean artists to open their studios and share their creativity and their passion.”
- Roland Davies, Director, British Council Korea & Yoonjoe Park, Arts Manager, British Council Korea
